Starting to Change
You can see the old pattern now. You just can't count on the new one when the day gets heavy.
Something has shifted, and you can feel it.
You catch it now. The reaction starts to rise and, more often than before, you can watch it happen instead of disappearing into it. The old story makes its case and you notice it is a story, not the truth.
Sometimes — not always, but sometimes — you set it down and choose something better.
A few years ago, that may not have been available to you.
Now it is.
That is not nothing.
That is the whole thing beginning.
But beginning is not the same as becoming reliable.
Some days, it is who you are.
Other days, it is what you can reach for when conditions are right.
On a good day, you are the man you are becoming. Steady. Awake. Able to answer from choice instead of reflex.
Then a hard one comes.
You are tired, blindsided, disappointed, misunderstood, cornered, or hit in the exact place where the old story still knows your name.
And the old pattern walks back in like it never left.
Same reflex.
Same speed.
Same old sentence trying to become the truth again.
Afterward, you see it clearly.
That is its own kind of ache.
You used to slip and not know.
Now you slip and know exactly what moved before you did.
You can see the man you are becoming. You just cannot count on him yet when the day gets heavy.
Starting to Change is not the first moment you see it.
It is the stretch where seeing and living are not yet the same thing.
You are no longer asleep inside the old pattern. But you are not fully led by the new one either.
That middle place can be hard to name.
It can feel like growth one day and failure the next. It can make you wonder whether you are actually changing, or only getting better at describing the change after the fact.
Whether the new man wins most days, or only the easy ones.
Whether the old pattern is fading, or just waiting for the next time you are tired enough to stop watching.
What you cannot see, from inside it, is how far the change actually reaches.
Progress always feels clearest on the days it works.
And failure always feels loudest on the days it does not.
Neither one tells the whole truth.
You can feel that you have moved.
You cannot see, from where you stand, how consistently the new pattern holds when pressure gets real.
No eye sees itself.
You have started to live from choice. You may not know how often the old pattern still chooses for you.
