Coaching, therapy, or both?
They do different jobs. Therapy is for healing, diagnosis, trauma and anything clinical. This is one-on-one coaching on how you react under pressure, at home and at work: catching the sharp word before it lands, and repairing faster when it doesn't. It isn't a substitute for therapy.
If you're in crisis, or the anger at home frightens you or the people you live with, a therapist or doctor is the first call. If anyone is in danger right now, call 911. In the US you can also call or text 988 any time. If you already see one, keep going; this can run alongside it. And if something clinical comes up while we work together, we pause and I'll help you find the right professional.
Keep what's working. Then make it hold on a Tuesday.
You may already have good help around you. Most of it shares one limit: it happens in a room, once a month or once a year, and the moment that matters happens on a Tuesday evening at the kitchen door. This is built for that moment, every week, for six months.
| If you already have | It's best at | How this fits |
|---|---|---|
| A therapist | Healing, diagnosis, trauma, anything clinical. | Keep them. This is not therapy and never pretends to be. If you're in crisis, they're the first call. |
| An executive or business coach | Strategy, growth, the numbers, the next level. | They usually coach the business. This works on the man running it, and the parts of his life the business pays for. |
| A peer group (Vistage, EO, YPO) | Perspective from other owners, and a monthly room. | A monthly room is good at advice. Change happens in the week between, one moment at a time. Bring what you learn here back to your group. |
| A men's group or retreat | Brotherhood, a big weekend, a reset. | The weekend is real. So is Tuesday. Six months is long enough for the new way to hold after the weekend fades. |
| Books and podcasts | Ideas, frameworks, the words for it. | You already know most of what you need. What's missing is someone who sees the one thing you can't, every week, and doesn't let it slide. |
One-on-one coaching on how you respond under pressure, at home and at work: weekly, practiced daily, and measured.
Therapy, medical care, or business strategy. If you need one of those, I'll say so and help you find the right person.
